Kawerau Certified Motorhome Friendly Town
Kawerau was recently awarded the Motor Home Friendly Town certificate and is an ideal destination for motor caravanners and is made even more attractive as a town with freedom camping. Kawerau is situated between Rotorua and Whakatane and located at the foot of the iconic Bay of Plenty landmark of Mt Edgecumbe (Mt.Putauaki) and surrounded by beautifully maintained Council gardens and scenic Reserves.
There are numerous walks to be enjoyed around Kawerau and none more so than the Tarawera River tracks. Kawerau is also the gateway to the stunning Tarawera Falls (pictured) and a permit is required (at a small cost) to travel into the forest along the unsealed forestry road. Staff at the Information Centre opposite the free hot pools in the town centre can assist with the permits.
The Kawerau Information Centre can also point you in the direction for the dump station and power access. There is a $25 bond for the key to access the power and is free for the first three days. The dump station is completely free.
There are numerous areas where freedom camping is possible and one of the ideal spots is along River Road next to the Tarawera River, which is the venue used for a variety of events in the Kawerau district. Kawerau Woodfest is already a favourite of motor caravanners with one of the local primary schools providing the area to camp close to the central attractions.
In September the National Woodskills Competition is celebrating 21 years and will certainly be an event to experience. For general information on events and anything in the Kawerau district see www.kaweraudc.govt.nz. For forestry permits and general information visit www.kawerauonline.com
