“Fantastic service” – Peter Fantham (#47532)
Trusted NZMCA partner, Carter’s Tyre Service made a big impression on NZMCA member Peter with above and beyond service on multiple occasions.
A month ago, when Peter was travelling south of Taihape, he was alerted by a following caravanner that there was a problem with his caravan’s right back tyre. The tyre had been completely shredded from the result of a puncture and had been flapping around, while the front wheel carried the weight. The tyre had taken out the mud-flap on the vehicle as well as the whole waste drain hose and fittings, clean off the waste tank. To make matters worse, this had forced the floor behind the wheel arch up, just enough to allow bits of tyre, wire and other garbage into the van.
Peter changed the punctured tyre to the spare and while doing so sent a silent thanks to Carter’s, as prior to this Peter had spoken to Phil of Carter’s Tyres at the Gisborne National Rally. They had discussed the manufacturers wisdom in supplying 185/14 spare tyres for their caravans fitted with 165/14 tyres. On hearing this, Phil advised that as the spare tyre supplied when the caravan was purchased new was the wrong size, it should not be used as a spare. Phil suggested that he could arrange to have tyres sent from Auckland down to Gisborne and send the incorrect spare tyres back to the supplier and sort the cost - saving Peter the hassle. So, thanks to Phil, Peter (and another member who had the same issue) got the right sized tyre spares. They were fitted by Mike at the Gisborne site as soon as they arrived, leaving the incorrect sized spare to be returned to the manufacturer.
Knowing that he had the correct spare tyre on hand meant Peter was able to drive to a secure location without any problems. He called Carter’s Tyres in Palmerston North, to verify they were the closest branch to Marton and if they had the correct tyre replacement. Unfortunately, the store didn’t have the correct size on hand, but after Peter relayed his predicament, they immediately arranged to get a new tyre sent to the store. Just after Peter got to Carter’s Tyres (having driven without his van), the new tyre had arrived. Once again, with no fuss the tyre was fitted straight away, and Peter was off on his way back to Marton, to fit the new tyre on his van.
Blown away by all they have done for him, Peter has told Phil that their service has resulted in him becoming a “roving frequent ambassador for Carter’s, spreading the word of [the] company’s top rate customer service ethics.” Since this incident, Carter’s have come along to the Canterbury AGM at the Kirwee Showgrounds. Phil drove from Tauranga to Auckland, then flew down to Christchurch to repeat the excellent and informative tyre workshop Phil delivered twice at the National Rally.
