Your new off-season benefit
The CampSaver program, is the latest exclusive NZMCA member benefit. We've partnered with select independent campgrounds nation-wide, to provide a low nightly rate to members on campground stays in the off-season months. The new CampSaver scheme is not only a great deal for members – it’s also a crucial initiative in the Association’s ongoing quest to secure more cost-effective parking options – and NZMCA CEO Bruce Lochore is urging all members to throw their enthusiastic support behind it.
“Like Motorhome Friendly and the Events Calendar, CampSaver is starting small. But just as those two programs have grown bigger and become more successful than we could ever have imagined, CampSaver has huge potential if members take it to their hearts,” he says. "Many of our members love staying in campgrounds and do so regularly, building strong relationships with individual campground owners. However, a barrier for some members is the cost of staying in a commercial campground. So, we have now decided to launch our own scheme, CampSaver, as a win/win for both the campground owners and our members.
"For campground owners, the sheer size of our 86,000-plus individual membership has the potential to significantly boost their occupancy rates during the off-season (March 1 – November 30, excluding Easter); and, of course, for members CampSaver provides a guaranteed attractive rate. The key now, says Mr Lochore, is for members to get in behind the scheme and show their support for the campground owners who have agreed to participate from the get-go.
“That’s a limited number at this stage,” he says, “but if we are serious about making this scheme work we’ve got to give those campground owners the best off season they have ever had. If we can do that, the word will soon spread – just as it did with Motorhome Friendly and the Events Calendar – and the number of participating campgrounds will take off. Our ultimate goal is to have a nationwide network of CampSaver campgrounds – it’s up to all of us to make that happen!”
The off-season period:
The CampSaver program is in effect from March 1st – November 30th for the year 2019. This is the only period to which the discount is valid for members,
The CampSaver rate:
NZMCA Members who stay at any of the participating CampSaver campgrounds will be offered an exclusive standardised rate.
This is a flat rate of:
$20 per vehicle, per night, max 2 people for powered and non-powered sites (extra adult $10, child $5).
If there are less than 2 people in the vehicle, the rate stays at $20. *Please see conditions below
Example of Rates:
1 Person = $20
2 People = $20
3 People = $30
4 People = $40
5 People = $50
Conditions for the rate:
Select participating campgrounds offer a different rate to the $20 vehicle rate for one person parking in one vehicle. This rate may apply to powered or non-powered sites. For any campground that offers a 'one-person rate' instead of the '$20 vehicle rate', it will be clearly stated in the online Travel Directory Profile, only for the campground to whom this applies.
Select participating campgrounds do not offer powered sites or have a limited number of them. It is a first come, first serve basis, and if powered sites are not available, a non-powered site will be offered at the same price.
Select participating campgrounds do not offer the CampSaver rate for non-powered sites and instead offer a cheaper rate. For any campground that offers special rates on non-powered sites, it will be clearly stated in the online Travel Directory Profile, only for the campground to whom this applies.
The CampSaver rate provides members a low nightly rate for a powered or non-powered site. As this rate applies to the cost of the site, there may be an additional charge for use of facilities, which will vary from park to park.
Important additional info:
The CampSaver program discount rate is for current NZMCA members only. Current membership cards should be presented at the campgrounds to receive the discount. NZMCA memberships are also non-transferrable and should not be lent to non-members.
While staying at participating campgrounds, when requested, please provide proof of membership. This can be either a membership card, or a silver financial card; it’s ideal to have more than one.
For a non-member travelling with an NZMCA member, to have the discount extended to them they must be travelling in the same vehicle as the card holder. If they are travelling in a separate vehicle they are not entitled to the discount.
Each campground varies in what they classify as a 'child' and decides their own maximum age limit for a child. Select campgrounds also offer children free of charge or have certain ages free of charge. Always ring ahead to check the campground's age policy to ensure the $5 rate will apply.
Each campground varies in the facilities they offer (and if there is a charge for usage). Always ring ahead to ensure a campground has the facilities you require and check the campground's Travel Directory listing.
The original driving force behind the initiative
In a recent survey you told us that the biggest barrier to staying in campgrounds was the price, and with CampSaver, we listened. But the initial idea behind the program itself actually stemmed from an interaction with Island View Holiday Park about their on-going, successful economic off-season.
CEO Bruce Lochore came across Island View, a campground gem situated on Waiotahi Beach in Opotiki, with stunning panoramic views out across the Pacific Ocean, overlooking White Island. While staying at Island View Holiday Park, Lochore discovered that they were offering an incredibly low off-season discount to NZMCA members and gold card holders - a nightly rate less than half of what it would cost to park there in its peak season. Island View Holiday Parks’ owner found that “whilst the nightly rate is low, the tendency for longer stays, together with growing numbers has more than compensated. We have found the NZMCA member group to be particularly respectful, and ‘low impact’ due to them mostly being fully self-contained”.
For Island View, taking this approach has created a win-win. While the off-season rate offers exceptional value for members, in return they have developed an important additional income stream during periods when they would otherwise have high availability and minimal revenue. So, we've decided to adopt this successful off-season discount approach with CampSaver, to help provide significant and exciting benefits to both members and holiday park owners alike.
