How we got McKeown on board
South Island members had noticed the great prices the company was offering on petrol and diesel at the pump, and also appreciated the convenience of McKeowns’ CardFuel locations and the fact that their forecourt layouts provided easy access for larger vehicles.
Keen to benefit even more through a formal relationship, the members weren’t backward in coming forward to let the Board and National Office know their views. And the rest, as they say, is history.
As new NZMCA partners, McKeowns has introduced an exclusive member fuel card - which offers a further discount off their already low pump price – and also provides a financial benefit to the Association.
Delighted to have that level of support from the membership, McKeowns’ Sales and Marketing Manager Paul Lindsay says he believes the fast-growing company’s offering fits well with NZMCA members’ needs.
“For a start, our largely off-the-beaten track locations work for members. We’re not in the main streets of the big cities – our outlets are in the sort of places members want to visit when they’re touring the South Island.
“We’re on the provincial highways that have traditionally been disadvantaged by fuel pricing, with outlets in places like Gore, Lumsden, Dunback and Twizel.
“And we’re open 24/7 too – so no matter what time of day or night a member pulls into one of our McKeowns’ CardFuel outlets they know they’re going to be able to fill up.”
Such features reflect the new model which McKeowns introduced to the industry back in 2009. Instead of mimicking the established brands’ flash forecourts and showrooms, McKeowns took a no-frills approach and invited the retail public and commercial onto the same forecourt at unmanned sites.
And then there’s the pricing. McKeowns has effectively put commercial pricing into the retail arena – and the locals love it.
When McKeowns opened in Lumsden, for example, their 24/7 network pump prices immediately saved the locals 3 cents per litre on what they were paying. When they opened in Twizel their diesel price was 14 cents per litre cheaper than the local garage. In Gore their petrol price is 6 cents per litre cheaper than the service stations and it’s a similar story in Kaikoura where locals say they are often more than 11 cents per litre cheaper than the garages in the main street.
And remember, those savings are only to the public. McKeown NZMCA Card customers save even more with their discounts.
