#mhftowns Nice 'n easy in Napier
Napier is a friendly gateway to other great scenic stretches of coastline in Hawke’s Bay and the perfect place to park up and explore.
The Hawke’s Bay earthquake on February 3, 1931 changed the landscape of Napier and many families’ lives forever. Out of the devastation rose a new city whose architectural style would reverberate down the years. Art Deco has helped put Napier on the international tourist map, particularly since local enthusiasts founded the internationally recognised Art Deco Weekend celebrating the era.
The Art Deco ‘weekend’ every February now stretches out to five days and attracts more than 30,000 people each year, with a smaller-scale sister event in July.
The town itself was established in the 1850s although Maori, particularly Ngati Kahungunu, were settled there long before that. Today Napier is known for its nice climate, tourist friendly atmosphere and now for being one of the latest NZMCA Motorhome Friendly towns.
Just a few minutes’ drive from its inland neighbour, Hastings, ‘The Twin Cities’ are the ideal starting point to explore this wonderful part of the world. Hawke’s Bay vineyards are internationally renowned and the area has many cycleways and walkways for members to enjoy. Napier is home to some unique attractions not found anywhere else in New Zealand, such as the National Aquarium. The city’s bustling cafe and restaurant culture, boutique retail experiences and nightlife means you won’t run out of things to see and do in a hurry.
Labour Weekend is a great time to visit, as the Hawke’s Bay Anniversary is celebrated on the Friday of every Labour Weekend. The annual Hawke’s Bay Show at the Hawke’s Bay Showgrounds in Hastings also hosts the New Zealand Royal A&P Show.
