11 new freedom camping sites in the Hurunui District

11 new FC sites added into the online Travel Directory & Travel App

At its council meeting in August, the Hurunui District Council decided to amend its Freedom Camping Bylaw based on public feedback collected from its freedom camping consultation.

Some of the more significant changes made include restrictions in freedom camping spaces in the Glenmark, Scargill Motunau and Hanmer Spring Reserves. This would ensure that existing toilet facilities in these locations can cope with the influx of freedom campers as well as be available for community use.

The proposal to completely prohibit freedom camping in Gore Bay and Hanmer Springs was considered not a proportionate response to the feedback received. As a result, further decisions regarding these sites will be postponed until after the summer of 2019/20.

The above sites mentioned (with the exception of Gore Bay which is already in the TD, #7300) are now in the online Travel Directory with the following site numbers:

  • Glenmark Reserve, #7310
  • Scargill Motunau Reserve, #7311
  • Hanmer Spring Reserves, #7225

The rest of the new freedom camping sites are:

  • Cheviot Rest Reserve, #7296
  • Chisholm Park carpark, 7310
  • Hurunui Dist. Council carpark, #7404
  • Old School Reserve, #7301
  • Rutherford Reserve carparks, #7260
  • Stocks Reserve, #7270
  • Wandle Bridge lay-by area, #7250
  • War Memorial Hall carpark, #7269

Familiarise yourselves with the images below showing their exact location via Google mapping.

Bear in mind that these sites were processed way after the content deadline for the online Travel Directory (7) and can only be found on the online TD and the Travel App.
