Spend a summer in Central – stay, EARN and play

'Some orchards also provide onsite camping options making staying and working even easier'

Central Otago’s orchards and vineyards are known around the world for the quality of their produce and are also some of the most picturesque places to be whatever the season.

With a significant predicted labour shortage as a result of ongoing border closures, the 2020-21 growing and harvesting season is going to be even more of a challenge for growers than any other year in history.

To get through, our orchards and vineyards need workers, up to 5,000 of them!! The season runs from late October through to April – reaching its peak in January. The sheer volume of workers needed exceeds what could possibly be sourced locally – and of course the normal international workforce is not going to be there.

Roles vary, from picking, pruning, tractor driving, forklift operators, net covering, packhouse quality control and more. The industry is working together and will be loading job information onto a dedicated website over the coming months.

NZMCA members are already a valued and respected contributor to the seasonal worker pool, and this year we are hopeful that more will take up employment opportunities to help our growers get the produce from the tree (or vine) to market.

Come and join us and you’ll get to stay in a beautiful part of New Zealand, spend time with like-minded people and earn $’s at the same time. Some orchards also provide onsite camping options making staying and working even easier.

The summer of 2020 / 21 could be your chance to revisit your youth – you know the one, long hot summers, exploring new places, spending time with friends and like-minded people, and picking up work to support doing more things. For more inspiration about Central Otago visit www.centralotagonz.com.
