Your guide to CampSaver in the central North Island

The Bay of Plenty, Waikato & Hawke's Bay

Travel across the Bay of Plenty, around the Waikato and over to the Hawke's Bay as you experience the best these regions have to offer. Boasting white sand beaches, tranquil lakes, rapid rivers and - if you're into cycling - there's trails aplenty to enjoy in the Bay of Plenty; such as Rotorua's exciting mountain bike parks to the more sedate terrain of the Dunes Cycle Trail, near Opotiki. It's the tourism centre of the North.

Pretty much wherever you go in the Waikato you'll find outdoor activities to suit every taste. Stretching from the bombay hills and all the way down to Mt Ruapehu, embrace the beauty of the waikato region boasting New Zealands largest Lake (Lake Taupo) and River (Waikato River), Tongariro National Park.

Best known in the North Island as the region with beaches, wineries, and is New Zealand's official 'Art Deco Capital'. The climate and layout make it perfect for easy cycle trails and is the first stop on the classic New Zealand Wine Trail.

We'll be featuring all Campsaver Campgrounds by region over time, keep an eye out for further articles, including next week’s Canterbury Area! For more information about the Campsaver Program, click here.

Island View Holiday Park (CDS, #2998)

6 Appleton Rd, Waiotahi Beach

One of the main driving forces behind the CampSaver NZMCA initiative, stemmed from the ongoing success of Island View Holiday Park’s off-season. In 2018, Chief Executive Bruce Lochore came across the campground gem, in a prime, absolute beachfront location on stunning Waiotahe Beach, Opotiki. The park has unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean, directly overlooks White Island, has a tennis court and swimming pool, and provides a relaxed atmosphere with generous free leisure facilities. In a nutshell – MAGIC. While staying there, Lochore discovered that Opotiki were offering an incredibly low off-season discount to NZMCA members. Excited by this approach, CampSaver was created to encourage members to travel more during the off-season.

"Recently stayed at this amazing camp which is right next to the beach. Excellent facilities including a brilliantly updated shower and toilet block designed in a Balinese style- breathtaking. Free powerful showers and free wifi. Excellent value for all the family. Great swimming pool too. Definitely recommended. We will be back!" - Carolyn
