4 km one way. These family friendly tracks stretch along the expanse of Five Mile Bay, and are great for either walking or biking.

Dogs allowed. Keep dog under control at all times. Take care when reaching the Five Mile Bay and Awaroa carparks. These can be a busy sites, especially in the summer months.

Description

This is a family friendly, shared-use path with a number of picnic areas, swimming opportunities and rest areas.

The Five Mile Bay Track is part of the Great Lake Walkway, also known as the Lion's Walk. For more information and a map of the complete trail visit Great Lake Taupō.

Continuing on from the track at Wharewaka Point, it follows a paved pathway along the water's edge passing the amenity area and carpark, and on to the residential area at Tawhaa Street.

At the end of the residential area, the paved pathway ends and becomes the Awaroa Track. This track continues along the lake edge, passing a wetland and crossing a small stream until reaching the settlement of Waitahanui.

Getting there

Five Mile Bay is off SH1, 8 km south of Taupō.

Take care when reaching the Five Mile Bay and Awaroa carparks. These can be a busy sites, especially in the summer months.
