Applications for the 2026-2027 hut warden season are open.
Volunteer as a hut warden at serviced, bookable hut - Ōtamahua Hut. Minimum commitment is outlined below. A commitment to more than one stint is preferred.

Description
Volunteer at Ōtamahua Hut on Ōtamahua/Quail Island. The starting location is within a one-hour drive of Christchurch city centre.
Hut wardens work a split shift, carrying out cleaning duties in the morning and then welcoming overnight hut and campsite users in the afternoon/evening. You will ensure trampers have bookings and are familiar with hut etiquette.
Hut wardens are welcome to spend the middle of the day exploring their surroundings.
Ōtamahua Hut
Location: Ōtamahua/Quail Island, Lyttelton Harbour
Features: 12 bunks and a separate warden’s quarters.
Access: Via the Lyttelton – Quail Island ferry service by Black Cat Cruises. Your ferry transport cost is covered by us.
Tasks
The primary role of a hut warden is to help visitors enjoy their stay.
You'll be expected to:
keep the hut, campsites, toilets and surrounds clean and tidy
provide information to visitors
provide guests with a hut talk including hut etiquette
check booking receipts of all overnight hut and campsite users
carry out daily health and safety check-in requirements with DOC staff
notify the Mahaanui DOC office of any maintenance required
other light duties may be required
What to expect
This volunteer opportunity is for one person at a time, at each location.
Accommodation and facilities
Ōtamahua Hut has private warden’s quarters at the rear of the main hut. You will need to bring your own cooking equipment. Ablutions are shared with the main hut.

You need to supply your own food.
Transport
You'll need to take the ferry from Lyttelton with Black Cat Cruises to the island. Your fare is covered by us.
Experience and fitness level required
Overnight, multiple day backcountry experience is essential. You'll need to be fully equipped. Any previous hut wardening experience will be an advantage.
You must have sufficient New Zealand tramping experience and be capable of walking to the huts with a heavy pack.
Other skills required
You need to be able to relate to a range of people in a friendly, informative manner, be fluent in English, and have practical outdoor skills. A first aid certificate is helpful.
Age restrictions
You must be at least 18 years old.
What to bring
If your application is successful, a DOC ranger will take you through the onboarding process and ensure you understand the role. This will include more details on the hut warden responsibilities, what to bring and the health and safety requirements.

Safety checks
Everyone who applies for this position is subject to a DOC safety check and Ministry of Justice criminal record check. Information about these checks will be provided after you apply.
What happens after you apply
Applications are shortlisted by matching to role availability.
If you are shortlisted, you will be a safety check form to complete.
We’ll also organise an interview time with you – the interview will be with a DOC staff member and it’s also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role.
We’ll talk to your referees.
We’ll request a Ministry of Justice criminal record check.
DOC staff will assess all the material provided and decide on suitability.
Once approved we will work with you to confirm dates and complete your induction.
