If there was ever a destination designed for winter, it's Tekapo
The heart of Mackenzie Country in winter, Tekapo comes alive during the colder months and for those willing to rise early, the reward can be even greater, as this region is also one of the more reliable places in New Zealand to witness the rare and beautiful hoar frost.
Hoar frosts blanket trees, fences and grasslands in ice crystals that are best experienced within an hour or two of sunrise. The best hoar frost mornings start early, but seeing the Mackenzie Country covered in frost is well worth setting the alarm for.
If you're more of a night owl, Lake Tekapo is also one of the best places to stargaze, and Dark Sky Project invites you to experience the magic with The Crater Experience. Located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, this guided experience takes place in purpose-built observation craters, specially designed to shelter you from wind and light pollution, allowing for exceptional viewing conditions and an intimate connection to the stars above over 75 minutes.
