B-Pillar Cosmetic cracking- Industry position and repair options (Mercedes & Volkswagen Motorhomes, 2006-2018)

Industry Position: This matter has been the subject of extensive engagement across vehicle manufacturers, cab chassis OEMs, and NZ Transport Agency (NZTA). Following engineering review and guidance from the OEM (Mercedes-Benz), it has been confirmed that:

  • Cosmetic cracking observed in the upper B‑pillar outer panel is non-structural in nature
  • There is no impact on the structural integrity or safety of the base vehicle, provided the original factory structure remains in place, or has been replaced by a similar part.
  • The primary risks relate to cosmetic appearance, potential corrosion, and possible water ingress over time

Accordingly, the industry has aligned on a cosmetic repair approach, focused on maintaining weather tightness and protecting the vehicle long-term.

Repair Approach: A standardised repair method has been developed through industry collaboration. This repair:

  • Is non-invasive and cosmetic only
  • Is designed to seal the affected area and prevent water ingress
  • Does not involve structural modification, welding, or reinforcement

Repairs are straightforward and are expected to take no longer than approximately one hour per side, depending on condition and preparation.

Repair Options Available: While these vehicles are well outside of original manufacturer warranty periods, the industry is supporting owners in good faith by offering the following options:

1. Back-to-Base Repair (Preferred Controlled Option)
Owners may have the repair completed at a participating workshop (subject to availability and booking).

2. Third-Party Panel Beater Repair (Owner Cost Option)
Owners may choose to engage a local panel beater to carry out the repair:

  • This option is at the owner’s cost
  • Work instructions and general guidance can be provided upon request
  • Repair quality, cost, and outcome remain the responsibility of the repairer and owner
  • Industry view is repairs should take no longer than 1 hour per side.

Identification of Affected Vehicles: Not all vehicles within the model years are affected.
Owners should inspect for:

  • Visible cosmetic cracking at the intersection of the B‑pillar and roof panel

If no cosmetic cracking is present, no action is required beyond normal monitoring.

Next Steps

  • If no cosmetic cracking is visible:
  • Continue normal use and inspection
  • If cosmetic cracking is present:
  • The repair should be completed prior to expiry of the vehicle’s WoF or CoF

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is issuing guidance on B-pillar cracks for New Zealand-manufactured motorhomes built on the following base vehicles:

  • 2006–2018 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 906155 and 907155
  • 2007–2017 Volkswagen Crafter 50 2FL2

What owners need to do
If you own one of these vehicles, you will need to have the B-pillar cracks repaired. You will need to seek advice from your vehicle's NZ motorhome manufacturer for the appropriate repair, as this will likely be model-specific.

To give vehicle owners time to complete the cosmetic repairs, these vehicles won’t be failed at certificate of fitness (CoF) inspection until 1 November 2026.
