Public transport: From Porirua train station catch the route 220 to the bus stop at the bottom of Gloaming hill and access the track via the Onepoto entrance.

    Well maintained track on inland route, do clockwise. Some steeper areas. Coastal track is flat but gates are not cycle friendly

Description

The track runs up the hill from Onehunga Bay down through the inland valley to Te Onepoto Bay and circles left back around the coast to the start point. A branch track from Te Onepoto Bay takes you to the Onepoto Bay carpark, 1 km away. Dogs very welcome, lead restrictions apply.

Amenities

  • There are toilets at the Onepoto road carpark open 24khr as well as in Onehunga bay which are open 6am till park closing.
  • Whitireia is a dog friendly park, sign posted lead restrictions apply.
  • GWRC provides dog poo bins and bags but no general rubbish bins so all other rubbish runs on a pack in pack out basis.
  • The park has a Ranger service, onsite times vary.

Get prepared

  • Pack adequate food and water.
  • Take adequate clothing and durable footwear and sun protection along with a basic toolkit, puncture repair kit, first aid kit.
  • Get an up-to-date weather report from the Metservice website before setting off.
  • Remember your dog’s lead.

Be aware

  • Always watch children near the water and on steep sections of the track.
  • Please be aware of narrow sections of road within the park and be courteous to other drivers and pedestrians.
  • Sections of the track are dogs on lead, especially around the coast during Penguin breeding season, but the rest of the park is off lead – under control.
  • The park has moderately steep hills and is exposed in places. Weather conditions can change quickly, so make sure you’re adequately prepared.
  • No camping, fires or motorbikes permitted. Gas BBQ’s are ok.
